Slinger Signaller N402

The NPORS N402 Slinger/Signaller course provides the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to safely and competently perform the role of a slinger/signaller in lifting operations. It is a nationally recognized certification suitable for both new and experienced operators in construction, logistics, and other industries involving lifting equipment.

Course Overview and Content

The course is designed to ensure participants understand their responsibilities under relevant legislation (e.g., the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and LOLER 1998). Key learning outcomes include: 

  • Understanding Roles: Describing the roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in lifting operations.

  • Equipment Knowledge: Identifying and explaining different types of lifting equipment and non-specialist accessories, including their construction and functions.

  • Pre-Use Checks: Performing pre-use checks on lifting accessories and knowing the procedures for placing unserviceable items out of service.

  • Load Management: Identifying the centre of gravity and estimating the weight and dimensions of loads.

  • Communication: Mastering standard hand signals (as per BS7121) and radio protocols to direct crane operators clearly and unambiguously.

  • Safety Procedures: Setting up exclusion zones, identifying hazards (overhead and underground), and maintaining safe working conditions.

  • Slinging Techniques: Securing various loads to a hook using appropriate accessories and procedures to ensure balance, security, and integrity. 

Course Duration and Options

The duration of the course varies depending on the participant's prior experience: 

  • Novice (No Experience): Typically 2 days, including full training and assessment.

  • Experienced Operator (EWT - Experienced Worker Test): Typically 1 day, involving only theory and practical assessments for those with at least 6-18 months of relevant experience.

  • Refresher: Typically 1 day for operators who have been previously tested but need updated training and retesting. 

Certification and Prerequisites

Upon successful completion of both the theory and practical assessments, participants receive an NPORS operator card.
